Making learning and the brain accessible for all.
My name is Kat Kiddell, and my mission is to help educators improve student outcomes by enhancing their understanding of the brain as it relates to the diverse contexts found in the classroom. Through my background in neuroscience, I have come to understand that it is not enough to study the brain in isolation; it is necessary to integrate psychology, cognitive science, and education sciences to create a comprehensive understanding of both teachers and students. My goal is to help educators by translating complex research into practical strategies they can implement in their classrooms and to empower teachers to act as learning scientists.
I taught in K-12 schools in Bangladesh, Kuwait, China, and Latvia for nine years. These experiences have required me to quickly adapt and integrate into new school cultures and curricula. While still in the classroom, I created and facilitated training sessions for teachers and leadership on a variety of topics, including managing conflict in meetings, integrating educational technology, and giving effective feedback. My curiosity about the latest research on growth mindset and mind-brain education during my time in the classroom led me to pursue a Master's degree in Neuroscience and Education at Columbia University. My thesis, a systematic review, explored the potential long-term effects of pandemic-related stress on the brain and behavior in developing learners. Additionally, I continue to work with the department as a curriculum developer for a new course, Neuroscience Perspectives for Educators, aimed at introducing pre-service teachers to the neuroscience relevant to their practice and enhancing their understanding of the learning brain.
My primary focus areas include social-emotional learning and the brain; stress, anxiety, and the brain; building classroom community to improve student outcomes; and the reading brain. My philosophy is grounded in neuroscience, cognitive science, and education research, guiding teachers to create positive learning environments that foster student engagement, social-emotional growth, and academic success.
I look forward to discussing how my services can help your teachers and students reach their full potential. You can connect with me through the contact page or email at info@learningwhilehuman.com.
